«Escape from Camp 14» — one of the most interesting and bizarre books I’ve ever read. Shin Dong Hyuk was born in a North Korean death camp and lived there for 23 years. Miraculously and thanks to a coincidence, he manages to escape and get into South Korea through China.
To escape of Shin Dong Hyuk helped the author of the book “Escape from Camp 14: One Man’s Remarkable Odyssey from North Korea to Freedom in the West” — the journalist Blaine Harden. Which communicates with Shin, writes his monologues and then wrote this book based on these conversations.
The book is interesting in that it is narrative passages about the life of the Tire in the camp are interspersed with the actual data about the life in North Korea. For me it was such a great surprise to find out how much the top of the party are corrupt and this rot affects the whole life of the country. And shocking that these are all facts and they have proof and witnesses. For example, in North Korea, electricity is served hourly. And after the flourishing of black markets and products from China and South Korea began to turn off and just. To find the staying in the tape cassette (i.e., according to authorities, the contraband)! And those who found to send to the camps.
An especially good book to read after the art of the book “the Orphan Master’s Son”, about the life of an ordinary/extraordinary person in North Korea. Helps to compare fiction with reality. Blaine Harden has done a Herculean job and this is one of the most fascinating artistic books I read this year.
